Excavator Operation Tips
Excavators are one of the most common pieces of heavy equipment on the market today. This is due to their unique combination of power and versatility. Given how frequently excavators are used, it’s all the more important that excavator owners know how to safely and effectively operate them. Luckily, the experts at Triangle Equipment Group have created this guide to excavator operation.
Before Using the Excavator
All excavator operators should be fully trained, certified, and aware of the relevant safety procedures. The operator should also be familiar with the specifics of the model they will be using. Even very similar excavator models may differ in key ways, so be sure to read the owner’s manual thoroughly. It’s also important that the excavator itself be well-prepared. An excavator in poor condition isn’t just less efficient, it's also less safe. That’s why routine excavator maintenance is so important. A quick safety inspection at the start of each workday is also useful.
When Using the Excavator
When moving the excavator, the operator should strive to use the safest possible route at all times. This means avoiding bumps and slopes in favor of flatter terrain. The bucket should be kept lowered while the excavator is in motion for better visibility. Finally, remember that most excavators are designed for power rather than maneuverability. Turns should be taken gradually, and the operator should strive to remain aware of any changes to terrain or traffic.
After Using the Excavator
Always park your excavator on the most level surface you can find, and remember to lower the bucket. Once you’ve found a suitable spot, turn off the auto-idle switch and run the engine at half throttle to allow the turbocharger to cool down. Finally, set the RPM to low idle before shutting the engine off completely. Don’t forget to lock up the cab.
